Luxator or elevator?

A luxator has a thin, sharp blade that is inserted into the periodontal ligament space along the root to loosen the tooth from the alveolar bone. It is used early in the extraction and must not be used for twisting or as a lever, as the blade can be damaged.

An elevator has a sturdier blade and is used as a lever between the tooth and the bone to lift a tooth or root that has already been loosened. Root fragment elevators are narrow and are used to remove root remnants.

The range

  • USTO-LUX: flat luxators, straight and curved, for atraumatic luxation.
  • BEIN: root elevators, straight from 2 to 5 mm, and modified versions that are curved backwards or bayonet-shaped.
  • Heidbrink: root fragment elevators in figures 1, 2 and 3.
  • Goldman-Fox: periosteal elevator from Osseotouch with a black soft-touch coating.
