Standard or micro needle holder?

Mayo-Hegar and Crile-Wood have ring handles and are used for suturing after extraction, implant surgery and flap surgery. Crile-Murray from Osseotouch has a locking mechanism and a black soft-touch coating.

Micro needle holders are used for fine sutures in periodontal and mucogingival surgery. Castroviejo has round handle sections and can be rotated between the fingers, so the hand does not need to be repositioned during suturing. Barraquer is available with straight and curved tips.

Tungsten carbide (TC)

The models marked TC have tungsten carbide inserts with a ground profile that holds the needle firmly so it does not twist. The tungsten carbide needle holders are gold-plated on the ring handles or shanks so they are easy to recognise, and Ustomed gives a 3-year guarantee on them.

Choose the length according to access

Shorter needle holders typically give more control in the anterior region, while the longer ones of 16–18 cm give better reach posteriorly. Threads and needles can be found under sutures, and scissors for cutting them under scissors.
