How to choose the right membrane?

A barrier membrane keeps the soft tissue out of the defect, giving the bone peace and time to regenerate. The choice depends mainly on how long the barrier needs to last and how much the space needs to be supported.

Resorbable collagen membranes such as collprotect® and Jason® do not need to be removed and suit most GBR indications. NOVAMag® in magnesium is mechanically stronger, but also degrades. Non-resorbable PTFE membranes – with or without titanium reinforcement – are used when space must be maintained in large and vertical defects, or in open healing.

  • Barrier function from weeks to months – or until removal
  • Resorbable: no removal surgery
  • PTFE with titanium maintains space in vertical defects
  • Fixed with pins, tacks or screws

Jason®botiss biomaterialsNative collagen membrane made from porcine pericardium. Very thin, yet with remarkable tear resistance – suitable for techniques involving fixation, e.g. the sausage technique.
PorcineMembrane
MonthsBarrier function approx. 3–6 months
Socket & ridge preservationSinus liftHorizontal augmentation (GBR)
collprotect®botiss biomaterialsNative collagen membrane made from porcine dermis, not artificially cross-linked. Natural pores allow rapid ingrowth of blood vessels.
PorcineMembrane
MonthsBarrier function approx. 2–3 months
Socket & ridge preservationSinus liftHorizontal augmentation (GBR)
NOVAMag® membranebotiss biomaterialsResorbable membrane of pure magnesium: mechanically strong like a metal membrane, but degraded by the body, so it does not need to be removed.
MagnesiumMembrane
MonthsDegrades within 2–4 months
Socket & ridge preservationSinus liftHorizontal augmentation (GBR)
OsGide®curasanSingle-layer collagen membrane of porcine collagen with elastin. Easy to stretch and suture, and hydrates in a few seconds.
PorcineMembrane
MonthsBarrier function up to 16 weeks
Socket & ridge preservationSinus liftPeri-implantitis & periodontal defects
mucoderm®botiss biomaterialsThree-dimensional collagen matrix of porcine dermis for soft tissue augmentation – an alternative to autologous soft tissue grafts.
PorcineMatrix
MonthsRemodels into the patient’s own tissue within approx. 6–9 months
Socket & ridge preservationSoft tissue augmentation
NeoGen® Ti-reinforcedNeossPTFE membrane with titanium mesh between two layers. Retains its shape and maintains space in larger horizontal and vertical augmentations.
SyntheticMembrane
Non-resorbableNon-resorbable – typically 3–9 months in situ
Horizontal augmentation (GBR)Vertical augmentation
NOVAMag® SHIELDbotiss biomaterialsPre-shaped magnesium shield for flapless reconstruction of buccal and palatal wall defects in the extraction socket – also in immediate implant placement. Needs neither fixation nor removal.
MagnesiumMembrane
MonthsDegrades within 2–4 months
Socket & ridge preservationHorizontal augmentation (GBR)
permamem®botiss biomaterialsMembrane of high-density PTFE (dPTFE). Can be left exposed for open healing and removed without surgery, as tissue does not grow into it.
SyntheticMembrane
Non-resorbableNon-resorbable
Socket & ridge preservationHorizontal augmentation (GBR)Vertical augmentation
NeoGen® PTFENeossNon-resorbable PTFE membrane with a dense side facing the soft tissue and an expanded side facing the bone.
