Barrier membranes for guided bone regeneration (GBR) and guided tissue regeneration (GTR) from botiss, Neoss, DIZG, Curasan and Trinon: resorbable collagen membranes, magnesium membranes, PTFE membranes, titanium foil and titanium mesh, as well as membranes made from human donor tissue.

How to choose the right membrane?

A barrier membrane keeps the soft tissue out of the defect, giving the bone peace and time to regenerate. The choice depends mainly on how long the barrier needs to last and how much the space needs to be supported.

Resorbable collagen membranes such as collprotect® and Jason® do not need to be removed and suit most GBR indications. NOVAMag® in magnesium is mechanically stronger, but also degrades. Non-resorbable PTFE membranes – with or without titanium reinforcement – are used when space must be maintained in large and vertical defects, or in open healing.

  • Barrier function from weeks to months – or until removal
  • Resorbable: no removal surgery
  • PTFE with titanium maintains space in vertical defects
  • Fixed with pins, tacks or screws

Resorbable membranes

  • Collagen: Jason® (porcine pericardium), collprotect® (porcine dermis) and OsGide from Curasan, which degrades over 12–16 weeks.
  • Synthetic: Epi-Guide from Curasan, made of polylactic acid (PLA).
  • Magnesium: NOVAMag® from botiss, which can be cut and shaped and is fully resorbed.
  • Human donor tissue: Cortiflex, a demineralised cortical bone lamina, and Epiflex, a decellularised dermis allograft, from DIZG.

Non-resorbable membranes

  • PTFE: permamem® from botiss, made of high-density PTFE.
  • Titanium-reinforced: NeoGen™ from Neoss with a three-layer design, with and without titanium mesh.
  • Titanium: titanium mesh of 0.1 and 0.2 mm and titanium foil of 20 and 40 µm from Trinon and Curasan.

Soft tissue

mucoderm® from botiss is an acellular collagen matrix of porcine dermis for soft tissue augmentation.

The membranes are fixed with pins and screws, and the bone material can be found under bone materials and allografts.

Alveolar Preservation: Decisions Based on Bone Morphology

Dr. Larissa Steigmann (Germany)

Dr. Larissa Steigmann shows how bone morphology after extraction guides the choice of socket preservation technique, especially when the buccal wall is compromised, with the aim of keeping the ridge contour and soft tissue in place for the implant.
