Serag-Wiessner

As the oldest German manufacturer of surgical suture material, SERAG-WIESSNER combines decades of experience with the latest medical know-how.

Production of sterile catgut began over a century ago. The company has also long been a successful manufacturer of sterile liquid dosage forms. High performance is not just a tradition at the Upper Franconian plant, but also a central focus for the future: The combination of precise craftsmanship and high-tech industrial manufacturing methods enables the company to meet the highest quality standards in the production of small batches, custom-made products and standard articles.

Absorbable suture material

Absorbable suture material is used for sutures that dissolve in tissue, where indicated. The so-called half-life has become an established criterion for absorbable suture materials. Depending on the indication, we supply short-term, medium-term and long-term absorbable suture materials in many different thread sizes.

Non-absorbable suture material

These suture materials consist of various polymer materials or stainless steel, and traditionally also of natural materials (silk).

Surgical needles

The atraumatic needles and eyed needles used in surgery must meet a wide range of requirements. We therefore offer a broad spectrum of needles suitable for a variety of indications. We only use 300 series stainless steel needles.

Good to know about sutures

absorbable or non-absorbable suture?

For absorbable sutures, a time period in days is typically indicated – it could be 7 days, 14 days, or more. This indication refers to the suture's half-life – i.e., when half of its strength remains. The suture itself usually disappears only after 2 to 3 times this indicated period.

Mono- or Multifilament?

Monofilament: A smooth suture. Low friction and collects fewer bacteria, but is slightly more difficult to achieve knot stability.

Multifilament: Braided from multiple strands. More flexible and easier to achieve good knot stability, but can absorb fluid and bacteria.
